In this design, the pure geometry of the circle combines
with the flowing contours of the land. A circular raised
bed filled with red-twig dogwoods stands as a sentinel
at the driveway entry. Following along a serpentine
driveway that skirts the bluff of a wooded ravine and
a planted grove of Sugar Maples, one approaches the
'arrival terrace'. Here, behind a curb made of recycled
sandstone, the terrace greets visitors with a surprise---a
bonded gravel surface inlaid with a hand-carved granite
millstone and a pebble mosaic spiral that radiates from
the 'sickle and furrow' pattern of the millstone. Lush
plantings of colorful perennials and fragrant flowering
trees surround the visitor on the arrival terrace. Before
reaching the front door, a brick landing adds color
and texture to the experience.

AMOS
RESIDENCE

The family's old farmhouse and outbuildings were demolished,
making way for a post-modern vernacular home. The old
farmhouse's sandstone foundation blocks, and variety
of old street bricks were stockpiled for re-use as edging,
paving and walls. Locust trees and field boulders were
gathered from the surrounding woodlots and used for
trellis posts and sculptural features. In addition,
the client wished to have a landscape that didn't require
a lawnmower. The resulting landscape uses plug-planted
native prairie gardens near the house, edged by vertically
placed foundation stones. The surrounding lawn was seeded
fescue meadow. The center of the driveway turnaround
was seeded with native forbs and grasses. A series of
bonded-gravel walks connect all exterior passages and
an outlaying seating circle. The result is a native,
low-maintenance landscape that extensively uses re-cycled
and locally gathered materials in useful and meaningful
forms that express the playful geometry of the house.

We remodeled the front entry and driveway to enhance
visibility and aesthetic experience. In the back, we
expanded the functional area and directed views away
from unsightly neighbor and focused on a pleasing river
vista. Throughout we designed lush plantings, stone
terraces, metal sculptures, porous bonded gravel paving,
custom stone and woodwork.

We designed new front steps and
a rear patio using recycled local sandstone. Steps are
inlaid with porous bonded gravel paving. Colorful stepping
stones form a path connecting the steps to a nearby
rose garden. Large boulders anchor the setting. The
steps overlook a one acre native grass and forbs meadow.
